Catherine Wong

Catherine Wong graduated from the University of Waterloo with an honours arts accountancy degree and a master of accounting. It was in her second year of undergrad studies that she became interested in auditing.
Shortly after graduation, Catherine returned to Ernst & Young’s Toronto office, where she currently works as a manager of Assurance serving clients in the Retail, Distribution and Manufacturing sector.
As an Assurance manager, she has had many exciting opportunities, including helping her clients with million-dollar prospectuses, capital acquisitions, client pursuits and sales.
More recently, Catherine took advantage of a sabbatical program at Ernst & Young and returned to the University of Waterloo to teach a first-year accounting course as an adjunct professor. Catherine also taught Introduction to Audit at Wilfrid Laurier University and worked with the CMA and ICAO to develop teaching materials.
Through developing programs such as the Adopt-a-Co-op program and Fall CA Night for small- and medium-sized firms at Waterloo, Catherine has cultivated a passion for working with students and universities, and is now Ernst & Young’s campus recruiter for Central Canada.
Outside of work, Catherine is involved with the United Way of Peel and is an avid volleyball player. She is also an enthusiastic traveller and has swum with penguins in the Galapagos Islands, climbed Machu Picchu, explored the pyramids of Egypt, fished for piranhas in the Amazon and snorkelled the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. |

Tiffany has always been a strong supporter of the University of Waterloo and the School of Accounting and Finance. For five years, Tiffany enjoyed being involved with the School’s endowment fund, Accounting Students’ Education Contribution Fund (ASEC). In different ASEC positions such as Director, Treasurer, Secretary, and Arts Representative throughout the years, she enjoyed promoting University of Waterloo’s accounting programs and improving the educational experience of accounting students with initiatives such as the Mentor-Buddy Program, preparation programs, accounting firm events, and speaker events. During Tiffany’s term as ASEC Director, ASEC started new initiatives such as the Adopt-A-Coop program and increased its accountability to donors through the first annual general meeting and annual report. She was also involved with organizing the accounting graduation ball as the Sponsorship Executive and professional development events as a Committee Member of the Accounting Students’ Association. Tiffany also worked as a Teaching Assistant at the School for a number of years. Tiffany was also very active in university and St. Jerome’s residence life. She held various leadership positions such as Co-Chair and Co-ordinator of campus-wide and residence orientation week for two years, Treasurer and Yearbook Editor-in-Chief of St. Jerome’s Residence Council, and English Tutor to an international student.
After graduating from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Arts in 2005 and Master of Accounting in 2006, Tiffany obtained her CA designation and continued to work with KPMG in Toronto in the Audit practice.
In 2008, Tiffany returned to school full-time. She will be graduating from University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law with a Juris Doctor in 2011. At law school, Tiffany has remained involved in extracurricular activities such as editing articles as an Assistant Editor of the Ottawa Law Review, managing finances as the Treasurer of the Business Law Student Society, revising a licensee contract as a Volunteer for Pro Bono Students Canada, and planning events as a Vice President of Events of Canadian Lawyers Abroad. Tiffany has gained some legal experience in private, public, and non-governmental organizations. She has gotten a taste for the private practice of law with Gowling, Lafleur Henderson LLP and Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. She is exploring her interest in public service by having summered at the Ministry of Attorney General in Toronto and currently interning with the Department of Justice, Public Prosecution Service of Canada, in Ottawa. She has interned with a non-governmental organization in Cameroon, Africa where she advocated on behalf of arbitrarily detained prisoners. In 2011-2012, she will be articling with Gowling, Lafleur Henderson LLP in the Business Law, Advocacy, and Intellectual Property departments.
Tiffany enjoys using her accounting skills to benefit the community and to help CA students through the SOA and UFE processes. She has prepared free tax returns for low-income individuals at volunteer tax clinics. As a Volunteer for the Daily Bread Food Bank, she researched and applied for a refund of retail sales taxes on real property and fixtures. Tiffany is actively involved with firm national practice examinations and Densmore SOA and UFE preparation programs. She has authored a practice case for Densmore and also marked practice exams for four years. In addition, Tiffany volunteered in Tanzania where she taught English and supported women affected by HIV/AIDS by conducting outreach visits to their homes and attending their community meetings.
In her spare time, Tiffany enjoys spending time with her family and friends, oil painting, playing the piano, and travelling to exotic destinations. She has travelled to Costa Rica, Galapagos Islands, Amazon, parts of Europe and the Caribbean, Japan, Egypt, and extensively throughout East and Southern Africa. |
Adam Laiken

Adam received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Accounting from the University of Waterloo in 2004. Upon graduating from the undergraduate program, Adam received the Mack McKie Scholarship from the Tax Executives Institute for having the highest average grade in the three undergraduate tax courses, as well as the Faculty of Arts Alumni Gold Medal at convocation. At convocation for the Master of Accounting, Adam received the Accounting Alumni Gold Medal. His good fortune continued that year with a placement on the National Honour Roll of the 2004 UFE. Adam is most grateful to all the quality professors and staff at the School of Accounting and Finance for his academic success.
Notwithstanding his lineage, tax award and indoctrination in the Microcosm of Life from a young age, and to the disappointment of many, Adam decided not to pursue a career in tax. Adam’s co-op terms were spent in the Financial Services and Insurance audit practice at Ernst & Young; however, after spending a year as a Senior Accountant, he chose to pursue a career in restructuring. Adam is currently a Manager at Deloitte & Touche in its Reorganization Services group within Financial Advisory. In Reorganization Services, Adam has worked on and led engagements across the entire “spectrum of trouble”, assisting companies early on in an informal turnaround role, as well as working on more formal restructurings under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
Inspired by the valuation course in the MAcc program, Adam completed his Chartered Business Valuator designation in 2009 and is currently enrolled in the Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professional (CIRP) designation program.
Adam enjoys travelling and is a passionate baseball and Blue Jays fan and is confident of their chances for next year! |
Derek Chu

Mr. Chu is a Chartered Accountant and graduated with a Masters degree in Accountancy from the University of Waterloo in 2005.
He worked as a Senior Associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in the audit practice prior to joining Deloitte and Touche LLP as a Senior Associate in the Transaction Services group performing due diligence on M&A transactions.
Mr. Chu joined Scotia Capital Inc.'s Investment Banking group in May of 2007 and worked within the Power and Infrastructure sector Derek has worked heavily in both the renewables and traditional utilities sector on a series of engagements involving equity offerings and M&A transactions. Derek works closely with organizations such as Canadian Hydro Developers, Brookfield Power, Kruger Energy, and Fortis Inc. Derek has also acted in a debt advisory role on several inaugural debt offerings in the power space. |
Ken Grondin

Ken graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1986 with a Master of Accounting and a Bachelor of Arts, Honours Chartered Accountancy Studies and a minor in Mathematics. After graduation from Waterloo, Ken articled with Clarkson Gordon and Price Waterhouse and specialized in tax and transaction advisory services.
Ken was admitted to partnership at Price Waterhouse in 1995 after transferring to the Winnipeg, Manitoba office to focus on combining Tax, Valuation and Business Advisory services for growth oriented companies.
During 1996 and 1997 Ken worked with a Price Waterhouse client Optx Group of Companies as EVP and CFO. Optx was focussed on the development and commercialization of specialized medical management solutions for treating cancer and other complex diseases.
From 1997 to 2001, Ken was a partner with Arthur Andersen in Winnipeg where he served as Head of the Tax Division and was a member of the Canadian Tax Leadership team for Arthur Andersen. Ken’s area of specialization continued to be Tax and Transaction Advisory services for growth oriented companies in the manufacturing, real estate development, consumer goods and transportation industries.
From 2001 to 2009, Ken was CFO, Executive lead for the Shared Services division, and a member of the Board of Directors for Nygard International, Canada’s leading designer, wholesaler and retailer of ladies’ fashion. Ken’s role was to lead the finance function for the Company plus manage the non-product support functions including IT and logistics to deliver industry leading supply-chain solutions that started with North American fashion design flowing to Orient and Middle-Ease manufacturing and finished with product distribution across North American wholesale, retail networks and e-commerce networks.
In 2009 Ken joined Parkland Income Fund (TSX: PKI.un) as Senior Vice President and CFO. Parkland is Canada’s largest independent fuel distributor and marketer supporting over 600 Retail stations, 77 Commercial Branches with complete supply-chain solutions for the “downstream” fuel marketing industry. Since joining Parkland, Ken has co-led successful refinancings, acquisitions and an ERP implementation.

Sabrina Nazzani

Sabrina graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Chartered Accountancy Studies and a Masters of Accountancy degree. She received the designation of Chartered Accountant in 1995. Sabrina started her career in 1990 with Gerald Duthie and Company in Windsor, Ontario as a University of Waterloo cooperative student.
Sabrina was appointed Director of Finance of Onex Corporation in January 2009. In this role, Sabrina is involved in the financial reporting for Onex Partners II LP and ONCAP, as well as the public financial reporting for Onex Corporation, where her responsibilities include the quarterly and annual reports. In addition, she is lead on all transaction-related securities filings. Prior to this appointment, Sabrina was Manager of Finance for Onex since July 1999.

Margo Longwell

Margo graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics degree in 1987, and also obtained her CA designation that year.
Margo began her career in 1983with a small CA firm in Thornhillasa Waterloo co-op student. She then joined the Toronto office of Peat Marwick (apredecessor to KPMG) in 1985. In1990, Margo moved to Ottawa, where she spent 10 years with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada. In 2000, Margo returned to Toronto and held the position of Principal, AccountingStandards at the CICA for two years.Margo is currently a Senior Director, Inspections and the Director of Policy, Methodology and Projectsfor the Canadian Public Accountability Board (CPAB), whereshe has been since its inception in 2003. In these roles, Margo heads an inspection team for one of the Big Four auditfirms, and is leading a project to update CPAB's inspection methodology.
Margois married with two children, and isactively involved with their sports programs, includingvolunteering as the manager of a competitive hockey team in the Greater Toronto Hockey League. Sheenjoys running,hiking,travellingandspending time at the family cottage in the Kawarthas. |
Hannah Chow

Hannah holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia. In 2002, she graduated with a Masters of Taxation from the University of Waterloo and obtained her Chartered Accountant designation. Hannah joined KPMG LLP in 2001, working in the Vancouver office in the Canadian resource tax group. Hannah remained with KPMG LLP, working as a Senior Manager in its Canadian resource tax group and later in its international tax group until 2009, when she decided to start her own tax practice in partnership with Michael Sadhra, CA. Together they formed Sadhra & Chow LLP, a business focusing on servicing the public mining companies in Vancouver, providing tax accounting, advisory and compliance services.
Hannah lives in Vancouver and is married to a professional chef. Hannah is a strong supporter of work life balance and in her spare time, she enjoys practicing hatha yoga, trying new cuisine with her husband, traveling, recreational scuba diving in Maui, skiing and snowboarding in Whistler, and spending time with family and friends. |
Larry Patterson

Larry graduated from the University of Waterloo with a BMath in 1976. He began his career with Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst and Young) in 1976 and earned his CA in 1979.
Larry joined Bauer Industries as Controller in 1983., becoming Vice President of Finance in 1992. He was been a member the board of Directors and a member of the executive committee of the board of directors. He was with the company for over 25 years.
Larry currently provides companies with the expertise of a senior level CFO on an interim, part-time or contractual basis.
Larry has enjoyed coaching minor sports and keeps active with golf, hockey and slow pitch softball.
Larry resides in Waterloo with his wife Louise (also a BMath graduate). He has two children, Andrea and Michael and one grandchild Isaac. |
Kris Hoang

Kris is a Chartered Accountant pursuing her PhD in Accounting from the University of Alberta. In 2003, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Accounting with a minor in French Studies, and in 2004, she graduated from the Masters of Accounting program at the University of Waterloo. During her studies, she worked as a research and teaching assistant. Her Masters Research Project examined the role of directors in strategic performance monitoring to extend the understanding of information use in corporate governance. She worked as an auditor in the Toronto office of Deloitte from 2001 to 2006, and also worked with Deloitte’s Governance Services group to develop materials for the Directors’ Series website and seminars. Most recently, she co-authored a book, “A Director’s Guide to Financial Reporting”, with Krista Fiolleau, CA, and Karim Jamal, PhD, FCA, (Business Expert Press, 2010).
Kris is currently conducting psychology-based research in auditing and corporate governance at the University of Alberta with an aim to contribute to both policy makers and accounting practice. Her work examines the judgment and decision making behaviour of auditors, managers and corporate directors based on the use of complex information. Kris has received funding support for her program through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. She expects to complete her doctoral studies in 2012. Kris is a member of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association (CAAA) and the American Accounting Association (AAA) and has presented at several international conferences. She has also taught an undergraduate course in assurance on financial information.
Kris was involved in several leadership activities at the University of Waterloo to enhance students’ educational and social experiences. She served as President and Chairperson of the Accounting Students’ Association (ASA), Director of Accounting Students’ Education Contribution (ASEC), and member of the Accounting Frosh Orientation Committee. A certified fitness instructor through the Canadian Association of Fitness Professionals since 2000, Kris also instructed exercise classes for UW Campus Recreation. She continues to teach a variety of fitness classes, including mixed martial arts, Pilates and yoga in Edmonton, where she lives with her supportive husband Quoc (also a UW Accounting alumnus) and enjoys being at the center of a growing city with a lovely River Valley that is conducive to an active lifestyle. |
Quoc Hoang

During his time at the University of Waterloo, Quoc developed life-long friendships and a strong educational base to launch his professional career. He graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts and in 2003 with a Master of Accounting.
Quoc is a strategy and operations advisor within Deloitte in Edmonton. Quoc supports his clients by helping them articulate what they want out of their finance functions, enabling them through effective processes, structures and technology, and implementing the corporate performance mechanisms needed to understand if they are tracking towards their goals. He is also actively involved in growing the local office’s consulting practice through the recruitment and retention of talent. Prior to joining Deloitte’s consulting service, Quoc worked as an audit manager in Toronto, leading teams serving publicly-traded, public sector and privately-owned organizations.
Quoc is happily married to another UW alumnus, Kris Hoang (née de Leon). Together, Kris and Quoc currently live in Edmonton, Alberta, where they now have the luxury of taking short drives to see the Rockies. In his spare time, Quoc loves to seek and document his culinary adventures. He often combines his love for food with personal travel in order to seek out memorable meals across the world. |
