Co-op WPA and WFM

AFM has one common academic program. However, you can tailor your résumé through your work experience in either the Chartered Accountancy (WPA) or Business and Finance (WFM) co-op work options.

Charted below are some points of difference between the WPA and WFM co-op work options.

  Chartered Accountancy
Admission Requirements Admission requirements are the same, whether the student is applying to the WPA or WFM option.
Specializations within option Public Accounting, Management Accounting, or Finance
Employers Chartered Accountant training offices*, industry, government or not for profit organizations
On the job Prepare financial statements; assist with audits; prepare and consult on tax matters for individuals and companies
Locations of work Ontario
In rare circumstances employment may be located out of the province.
Salary $12 - $21/hr

Salary will depend on a number of variables including size of firm, type of responsibility, and experience.  Historically there have not been major differences in salary.
Opportunities after graduation Enter workforce
Complete CA
Complete a MAcc
Switching co-op opions It is not possible to switch from Chartered Accountancy -->Business and Finance or Business and Finance -->Chartered Accountancy.
Effect on scholarships and fellowships Your choice of co-op employment option will not affect scholarship and fellowship selection.  Fellowships and scholarships will be awarded based on criteria other than co-op option.

* Experience gained at an accredited CA training office by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) or the CA School of Business (CASB) can be counted toward the CA's 30 month experience requirement.

 

  Business and Finance
Admission Requirements Admission requirements are the same, whether the student is applying to the WPA or WFM option.
Specializations within option Public Accounting, Management Accounting, or Finance
Employers Industry (e.g. IBM, Sleeman's)
Government (e.g. Ministry of Transportation)
Not-for-profit agency (e.g. Red Cross)
On the job A variety of work activities, such as business analysis, preparing an organization’s financial statements, using financial skills to assist other areas (e.g. marketing).
Locations of work Ontario, Other provinces, Other countries
Salary $12 - $21/hr

AFM
The School of Accounting and Finance is the only English speaking professional school of its kind in Canada. We offer 2 undergraduate (Accounting and Financial Management and Computing and Financial Management) and 3 graduate (Master of Accounting; Master of Taxation; PhD in Accounting) programs to provide students with the technical, analytical, evaluative, and communication skills needed to prepare for successful careers in public accounting, finance, industry, government and not-for-profit sectors.
