Deloitte Tax Scholarship

Deloitte is proud to partner with the School of Accounting and Finance at the University of Waterloo through the Deloitte Center for Tax Education and Research. We are committed to improving the quality of tax education and tax research at the University of Waterloo and throughout Canada.

Purpose of the award
The purpose of the Deloitte Tax Scholarship is to recognize outstanding University of Waterloo students who display the attributes of a successful tax professional. We are looking for well-rounded students who display strong communication, analytical, creative and time management skills. Ideal candidates can demonstrate leadership in the community and through extracurricular activities, while maintaining a strong academic record.

Who can apply?
The award is open to all students, including those off-campus, enrolled in a September 2011 program offered through the School of Accounting and Finance at the University of Waterloo who have an interest in pursuing a career in tax or public accounting. Previous work experience in tax or public accounting is not required. Previous Deloitte Tax Scholarship winners cannot apply.

What is the award?
A $2,500 one-time award. Up to eight awards are given each year.

About the award
The Deloitte Tax Scholarship was started in 2002. Since inception, over $132,500 has been awarded to more than 50 students, representing all years.

Many recipients have gone on to pursue a career in tax, as well as in audit and consulting. Read the student profiles of some past winners.

What
To apply, you must submit:

  1. An essay (up to 800 words) answering the following question:

As members of Canada’s largest tax practice, Deloitte professionals strive to deliver superior client service.  One of the client service principles that Deloitte applies to achieve this goal is to understand our clients’ business and what is important to them.  Discuss why you believe it is important for tax professionals to have a complete understanding of their clients’ business.

  1. A copy of your university transcript (high school transcript for 1A applicants)
  2. A copy of your resume
  3. Details of your extracurricular activities, if not included in your resume.

When
The deadline for submitting your application is October 12, 2011 at 5:00 pm.

AFM
The School of Accounting and Finance is the only English speaking professional school of its kind in Canada. We offer 2 undergraduate (Accounting and Financial Management and Computing and Financial Management) and 3 graduate (Master of Accounting; Master of Taxation; PhD in Accounting) programs to provide students with the technical, analytical, evaluative, and communication skills needed to prepare for successful careers in public accounting, finance, industry, government and not-for-profit sectors. In conjunction with the Faculties of Mathematics and Science, the School also administers 2 undergraduate programs (Mathematics/Chartered Accountancy; Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy) and 1 graduate program (Master of Quantitative Finance).
