SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE

FINANCIAL LITERACY COMPETITION

Assisting students in meeting the challenges of a modern economy

The University of Waterloo's School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) graduates the largest number of accounting academics in Canada and has an unparalleled reputation for excellence in accounting and finance education.

In response to the 2010 Ministry of Education Working Group on Financial Literacy report that identified the importance of financial literacy education in supporting the success of all students, the SAF has established the Financial Literacy Competition to assist in educating and promoting financial responsibility.

2013 Financial Literacy Competition - May 28, 2013

FLC Background: To create exceptional learning opportunities for bright secondary school students, the SAF has established the Financial Literacy Competition (FLC) to help support and enhance financial literacy education within Canadian secondary schools.

The FLC, has been developed in collaboration with Business Studies teachers within the Waterloo Region and Waterloo Catholic District school boards. Currently, the FLC will be offered to Grade 9 and 10 students in the Southwestern Ontario public and catholic schools and eventually to all Ontario and Canadian secondary school students. This is an exciting opportunity for secondary school teachers to engage their students to test and challenge their knowledge in personal finance and wealth management, as well as generating interest in furthering their studies in the areas of accounting, finance, and business.

Competition:

  • provide an incentive for secondary school students to learn more about personal and business finance,
  • offer an excellent opportunity for the SAF to share, contribute, and assist secondary schools in delivering
and integrating financial literacy education into the Ontario curriculum,
  • foster the interest of secondary school students in the disciplines of finance, accounting, and business,
  • offer an excellent opportunity for secondary school teachers to contribute to the development and ongoing
    enhancement of the FLC, and
  • create a talented pool of secondary school students who will be confident in their financial security and
well-being in dealing with an increasingly complex world of finance.

Contest format:

  • 75 multiple choice questions
  • 1 hour
  • Competition to be conducted during class between 8:15am and 12:00pm
  • 75 total marks
  • Only non-programmable calculators provided will be permitted
  • NOTE: For the 2013 FLC, the contest will be paper based and supervised by a Business Studies teacher

  • Open to Grade 9 and 10 secondary school students enrolled in or having already completed a Business Studies course.

  • Maximum of 10 students per school to be selected.

  • Selection of students will be at the discretion of the Business Studies teacher.
  • Most of the questions are based on the Business Studies curriculum for Grades 9 and 10.

Questions will be based on the following topics:

    • Income Management
    • Banking
    • Investing
    • Credit
    • Economic Basics
    • Accounting

We recommend that students spend some time preparing for the FLC by challenging the sample questions. We encourage teachers to make this a regular classroom activity.
