FINANCIAL LITERACY COMPETITION

Assisting students in meeting the challenges of a modern economy

The University of Waterloo's School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) graduates the largest number of accounting academics in Canada and has an unparalleled reputation for excellence in accounting and finance education.

In response to the 2010 Ministry of Education Working Group on Financial Literacy report that identified the importance of financial literacy education in supporting the success of all students, the SAF has established a Financial Literacy Competition to assist in educating and promoting financial responsibility.

To create exceptional learning opportunities for bright secondary school students, the SAF has established a Financial Literacy Competition (FLC) to help support and enhance financial literacy education within Canadian
secondary schools.

The FLC, will be developed in collaboration with business teachers within the Waterloo public and separate school boards. The inaugural FLC will be offered to select Grade 9 and 10 students, initially in the Waterloo public and separate schools and eventually to all Ontario and
Canadian secondary school students. This is an exciting opportunity for secondary school teachers to engage their students to test and challenge their knowledge in personal finance and wealth management, as well as generating interest in furthering their studies in the areas of accounting, finance, and business.
  • provide an incentive for secondary school students
to learn more about personal and business finance,
  • offer an excellent opportunity for the SAF to share,
contribute, and assist secondary schools in delivering
and integrating financial literacy education into the
    Ontario curriculum,
  • foster the interest of secondary school students in
the disciplines of finance, accounting, and business,
  • offer an excellent opportunity for secondary school
teachers to contribute to the development and ongoing
    enhancement of the FLC, and
  • create a talented pool of secondary school students
who will be confident in their financial security and
well-being in dealing with an increasingly complex
    world of finance.

Financial Literacy Competition - May 28, 2012

The contest: The FLC will consist of a one-hour written test of 75 multiple choice questions. Answers will be recorded on scantron cards. The SAF will provide each participating secondary school with all the materials needed to administer the writing of the FLC within each school.

Participation: For the 2012 competition, the FLC will be delivered to Waterloo public and separate school boards.

Selection of contest writers: Open to Grade 9 and 10 secondary school students enrolled in or completed a business studies course. Selection of students will be the discretion of the business studies teacher.

Reward and recognition: Each participating school will receive a ranked listing of their individual student participants and an overall school ranking. The top scoring student from each school will be awarded and recognized through scholarships, physical and/or experiential prizes.
