Bachelor of Accounting & Financial Management

Lecture: Making the Transition

We were led to a lecture hall in MC and given our first lecture as Waterloo students. The lecture was interesting and quite engaging. We learned the differences between high school and university and

some important strategies for success. To be honest, most of this information was already in my knowledge, but it was helpful to see all of it presented at once in such a clear and organized manner.

Things we learned were how to time-manage and be responsible with our independence. We went over some dos and don’ts for lectures, such as do arrive a little early and don’t talk on the cell phone!

Student Services and Your First Six Weeks (a.k.a Scavenger Hunt!)

I loved this part of SL 101 – it was my favourite! The way the event was organized combined fun and education in the

most perfect way. The goal of the Scavenger Hunt was to visit all of the buildings listed on a piece of paper. At each building, an Experience Leader was there to share with you some background to the building and the services that can be found in it.

The stops in the scavenger hunt included the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office in Needles Hall, Health Services (located across the SLC), the Centre for Career Action in TC, Co-operative Education & Career Services in TC, and the Student Life Centre, which houses many different services like the Used BookStore, the WatCard Office, FedsExpress, and the uWaterloo TechShop.

I wasn’t aware of how many services could be found on the Waterloo Campus until SL 101. It is very comforting to know that I won’t feel isolated or deprived of any needs on campus. It really is like a small town at UW! Everything I could need is right at my fingertips.

Honestly, I am still not completely familiar with the campus. I know a lot about the different buildings, but I still need some practice getting to places. (I’m terrible with directions!) However, if it weren’t for SL 101, I would know nothing about the campus and would have been completely lost. This experience allowed me to feel comfortable with living here for the next year!
