Bachelor of Accounting & Financial Management

Before Student Life 101

Right after I accepted my Offer of Admission to uWaterloo’s Accounting and Financial Management program, I found the School of Accounting and Finance group on Facebook and tuned in to what my fellow classmates were saying. This is where I first found out about Student Life 101.

In the following weeks, I was hearing about Student Life 101 left and right. (The publicity and marketing of this event was great.) The SL 101 Facebook group was both helpful and informative.

To be honest, I was skeptical about this event at first; I wasn’t sure if the experience would be worth the price. In the end, I figured, if nothing else, I would be able to get the ELPE over with, get my WatCard, and, most importantly, make some new friends at this overnight stay, which I thought, more or less, justified the 169 dollars.

Arrival and Registration

I arrived in the REV lobby and was immediately greeted by cheerful and enthusiastic Experience Leaders. I registered and was given my room key and WatCard. Alas, I was met with my first obstacle on uWaterloo soil here – getting my WatCard into the card-holder-slot-thing-attached-to-the-lanyard

This plastic clear thing is what I’m talking about!

When I came to terms with the futility of my attempts, I asked an Experience Leader for help. She happily took my WatCard, and, after assuring me that she was a seasoned pro, snapped my WatCard in perfectly with two powerful squeezes. At this moment, I realized that SL 101 would be a worthwhile experience. This upper year student shared with me her years of experience with WatCards, so I wouldn’t have to go through the trouble myself. I realized now that I would have access to tons of valuable information and advice in these two days.

Immediately following registration, I went to my room in REV and put away my belongings. As soon as I came back out, a girl named Bonnie, from the room next to mine, introduced herself to me. My roommate, Shirley, came shortly after and we all began conversing. Making friends was definitely not a problem at Student Life 101 – the ‘roommate’ aspect ensures that you get to know at least one person well during the stay.
