Andrew Dunn

School of Accounting and Finance Fellowship Honourees

Andrew Dunn, MAcc, CA, CMA

Andrew completed his Honours Bachelors degree in 1986 and his Masters degree in 1987, both at the University of Waterloo, in the inaugural tax major in the graduate program. Awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada scholarship during his graduate degree, Andrew was Valedictorian of the School of Accounting and Finance class of 1987.

From his days as a teaching assistant at Waterloo, Andrew has been keenly interested in education. He helped develop a tax correspondence course at the University of Toronto office before he began lecturing there (from 1989 to 1994). In 1996, he served as a member of the Curriculum Advisory Board for the Master of Tax degree at Waterloo, offered beginning in 1997. Over the years, Andrew has continued to write and speak frequently. He has been the co-editor of the Corporate Planning feature of the Canadian Tax Journal since 1994 and is currently a lecturer in the CICA Corporate Reorganizations Advanced Tax course.

In 1996, Andrew became one of the charter members of the Deloitte Centre for Excellence in Taxation Research and Education. The Centre, which he currently co-chairs with Jim Barnett, funds a Tax Chair (currently Dr. Ken Klassen), 8 annual undergraduate scholarships for students with an interest and aptitude in tax, and last year began an annual National Academic Symposium for tax professors and doctoral students from all backgrounds across the country.

Andrew joined Deloitte for his internship while in the School of Accounting and Finance, hired directly into their tax group, their first so-called direct entry hire. At Deloitte, Andrew has helped develop a thriving program of hiring co-ops and university grads directly into tax and arranging a series of audit engagements over a three year period to meet the necessary audit hour requirements to become a CA.

Andrew became a partner at Deloitte in 1994, taking a one year stint as a Tax Policy Advisor in 1990/91. Named one of Canada's leading tax advisors in 2003 by the International Tax Review, Andrew is currently National Managing Partner for Financial Services Tax and Managing Partner for GTA Tax.

Andrew lives happily with his wife, Christine, and two energetic and thoughtful boys, Charlie and Liam.
