Jack Hanna

School of Accounting and Finance Fellowship Honourees

John (Jack) R. Hanna, PhD, FCA

Jack Hanna, founding director of UW’s School of Accounting and Finance, has inspired much of Canada’s professional accounting education.

Arriving at McMaster University in 1966, he quickly took leading roles in the Faculty of Business and the ICAO, and was involved in the CA Summer School. He also provided leadership during debates about inflation accounting in the 1970s and ‘80s.

In 1980 he moved to UW, where his vision led to the creation of Canada’s first university-based School of Accounting and Finance. Under his dynamic leadership, the School grew rapidly, adding MAcc and PhD programs to the existing undergraduate programs.

Named a Distinguished Professor Emeritus upon retiring in 1996, Jack has traveled around the world in pursuit of rare species of birds. He is a Yankees fan and, with his son, enjoys seeing the team play in ballparks across North America. Jack and his wife Cathy visit New York City frequently to see their daughter and attend Broadway plays. When at home in Dundas, Ontario, Jack enjoys spending time with his six young grandchildren, reading, visiting local theatres, and wine tasting.
