Kris Hoang - MAcc 2004, CA, PhD Student

Kris is a Chartered Accountant pursuing her PhD in Accounting from the University of Alberta. In 2003, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Accounting with a minor in French Studies, and in 2004, she graduated from the Masters of Accounting program at the University of Waterloo.  During her studies, she worked as a research and teaching assistant. Her Masters Research Project examined the role of directors in strategic performance monitoring to extend the understanding of information use in corporate governance.  She worked as an auditor in the Toronto office of Deloitte from 2001 to 2006, and also worked with Deloitte’s Governance Services group to develop materials for the Directors’ Series website and seminars.  Most recently, she co-authored a book, “A Director’s Guide to Financial Reporting”, with Krista Fiolleau, CA, and Karim Jamal, PhD, FCA, (Business Expert Press, 2010).

Kris is currently conducting psychology-based research in auditing and corporate governance at the University of Alberta with an aim to contribute to both policy makers and accounting practice. Her work examines the judgment and decision making behaviour of auditors, managers and corporate directors based on the use of complex information. Kris has received funding support for her program through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. She expects to complete her doctoral studies in 2012. Kris is a member of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association (CAAA) and the American Accounting Association (AAA) and has presented at several international conferences. She has also taught an undergraduate course in assurance on financial information.

Kris was involved in several leadership activities at the University of Waterloo to enhance students’ educational and social experiences. She served as President and Chairperson of the Accounting Students’ Association (ASA), Director of Accounting Students’ Education Contribution (ASEC), and member of the Accounting Frosh Orientation Committee. A certified fitness instructor through the Canadian Association of Fitness Professionals since 2000, Kris also instructed exercise classes for UW Campus Recreation. She continues to teach a variety of fitness classes, including mixed martial arts, Pilates and yoga in Edmonton, where she lives with her supportive husband Quoc (also a UW Accounting alumnus) and enjoys being at the center of a growing city with a lovely River Valley that is conducive to an active lifestyle.
