Leonard Eckel, PhD, FCA
Leonard Eckel graduated from the University of Saskatchewan , BA( Philosophy), B Comm. in 1960 and became a Chartered Accountant in Regina in 1962. After a year as Systems Officer and Internal Auditor at the U of S, he went to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor for graduate studies and received the MBA in 1964 and the PhD in 1969. He received the CICA Silver Medal in the Uniform Final Examinations, received his MBA cum laud, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and was elected a Fellow of the Ontario Institute in 1973.
He joined the Faculty of Business at McMaster University in 1966 when the full-time MBA program began and was involved in program design and implementation. In 1981, he moved, with five colleagues, to the University of Waterloo establish the School of Accounting and Finance, where he served as Professor of Accounting until retirement in 2001. He was heavily involved in program design and implementation as chair of the Curriculum committee, and served as Director of the Master of Accounting and PhD programs.
His taught financial theory and financial accounting, and his research interest was discounted liabilities, including environmental obligations. His professional activities included committee service with the CICA - including the CICA accounting standards committee early in his career – and with the Ontario Institute, expert witness service re GAAP, and consulting concerning environmentally-related risks and costs.
He retired from the School of Accounting and Finance in 2001, but continues with selected research and consulting activities, including work with the Faculty of Science concerning the “Science and Business” programs. He and his wife Mary enjoy travel, the cottage, eight grandchildren, and photography.
