Tiffany Hu, BA, Macc, 2006, CA

Tiffany has always been a strong supporter of the University of Waterloo and the School of Accounting and Finance.  For five years, Tiffany enjoyed being involved with the School’s endowment fund, Accounting Students’ Education Contribution Fund (ASEC).  In different ASEC positions such as Director, Treasurer, Secretary, and Arts Representative throughout the years, she enjoyed promoting University of Waterloo’s accounting programs and improving the educational experience of accounting students with initiatives such as the Mentor-Buddy Program, preparation programs, accounting firm events, and speaker events.  During Tiffany’s term as ASEC Director, ASEC started new initiatives such as the Adopt-A-Coop program and increased its accountability to donors through the first annual general meeting and annual report.  She was also involved with organizing the accounting graduation ball as the Sponsorship Executive and professional development events as a Committee Member of the Accounting Students’ Association.  Tiffany also worked as a Teaching Assistant at the School for a number of years.  Tiffany was also very active in university and St. Jerome’s residence life.  She held various leadership positions such as Co-Chair and Co-ordinator of campus-wide and residence orientation week for two years, Treasurer and Yearbook Editor-in-Chief of St. Jerome’s Residence Council, and English Tutor to an international student.

After graduating from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Arts in 2005 and Master of Accounting in 2006, Tiffany obtained her CA designation and continued to work with KPMG in Toronto in the Audit practice.

In 2008, Tiffany returned to school full-time.  She will be graduating from University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law with a Juris Doctor in 2011.  At law school, Tiffany has remained involved in extracurricular activities such as editing articles as an Assistant Editor of the Ottawa Law Review, managing finances as the Treasurer of the Business Law Student Society, revising a licensee contract as a Volunteer for Pro Bono Students Canada, and planning events as a Vice President of Events of Canadian Lawyers Abroad.  Tiffany has gained some legal experience in private, public, and non-governmental organizations.  She has gotten a taste for the private practice of law with Gowling, Lafleur Henderson LLP and Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP.  She is exploring her interest in public service by having summered at the Ministry of Attorney General in Toronto and currently interning with the Department of Justice, Public Prosecution Service of Canada, in Ottawa.  She has interned with a non-governmental organization in Cameroon, Africa where she advocated on behalf of arbitrarily detained prisoners.  In 2011-2012, she will be articling with Gowling, Lafleur Henderson LLP in the Business Law, Advocacy, and Intellectual Property departments.

Tiffany enjoys using her accounting skills to benefit the community and to help CA students through the SOA and UFE processes.  She has prepared free tax returns for low-income individuals at volunteer tax clinics.  As a Volunteer for the Daily Bread Food Bank, she researched and applied for a refund of retail sales taxes on real property and fixtures.  Tiffany is actively involved with firm national practice examinations and Densmore SOA and UFE preparation programs.  She has authored a practice case for Densmore and also marked practice exams for four years.  In addition, Tiffany volunteered in Tanzania where she taught English and supported women affected by HIV/AIDS by conducting outreach visits to their homes and attending their community meetings.

In her spare time, Tiffany enjoys spending time with her family and friends, oil painting, playing the piano, and travelling to exotic destinations.  She has travelled to Costa Rica, Galapagos Islands, Amazon, parts of Europe and the Caribbean, Japan, Egypt, and extensively throughout East and Southern Africa.
