Current PhD Students

Louise Hayes:

Louise is a fifth year PhD student interested in accounting information system design and accountants’ professional judgments. Interest in how people interact with information systems has been the common thread running through her studies (BSc in Computer Science and MBA in Finance from University of British Columbia), work as a Chartered Accountant (a computer audit specialist with a predecessor firm of KPMG), and teaching experience (served on various teaching and technology committees at Department, Faculty and Senate level while teaching at York University).

Adam Preslee:

Adam Presslee is a fourth year PhD student at the School of Accounting and Finance. Prior to joining the PhD program, Adam obtained his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta School of Business and his Chartered Accountant designation while working as an auditor for Deloitte. Adam’s research interests include using experiments to understand the effects that monitoring, measuring, evaluating and rewarding have on employee behaviour and performance.

Travis Chow:

Travis Chow is a fourth year PhD student in accounting with a research focus on taxation. He is interested in the determinants of firms’ disclosure choices of tax information, the interpretation of tax-related disclosures by capital market participants, and the role of tax risk in mergers and acquisitions. He previously co-taught an undergraduate course on Introduction to Canadian Income Tax at the University of Waterloo. Prior to joining the PhD program, he was as an analyst at Altus Group in Toronto, where he provided economic analysis for real estate developments. He graduated with First Class Honors from the University of Alberta with a BA in Economics in 2005, and then went on to complete his MA in Economics and MSc in Statistics at the University of Toronto, where he interned at the Statistical Consulting Service. He earned his A.Stat. designation from the Statistical Society of Canada in 2008.

Lev Timoshenko:

Lev is a first year PhD student in the School of Accounting and Finance. His research interests are in empirical financial accounting. Prior to joining the program, Lev obtained his BBA in Accounting at Simon Fraser University and BSc in Mathematics at Belarusian State University. Lev is a Certified General Accountant in the province of British Columbia.

Vishal Baloria:

Vishal is a first year PhD student at the School of Accounting and Finance. He obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Toronto and Masters of Finance and Business Economics from McMaster University. Vishal earned his Chartered Accountant designation in 2010. His broad research interests include the use of financial accounting information by capital market participants and regulation of audit markets.

Lei Ma:

Lei is a second year PhD student in the School of Accounting and Finance. His research interests lie in empirical financial accounting. Prior to joining the program, Lei obtianed his BBA in Accounting at Sun Yat-Sen University and MAcc at Bentley University.

Kun Huo:
Office: 384

Kun Huo is a second year PhD student.  Prior to joining the PhD programs, he obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University and his Chartered Accountant designation while working as an auditor for Grant Thornton.  His broad research interests include understanding the decision making process of accounting related tasks as well as the effects of performance measures on employee motivation.  In his spare time, he enjoys photography and playing sports.

Ian Burt:

Ian Burt is a first year PhD student at the School of Accounting and Finance. Prior to joining the PhD program, he obtained his Bachelor of Science from the Cornell University, his Masters of Accountancy from Michigan State University and his Certified Public Accountant designation while working as an external and internal auditor. His broad research interests include internal control systems and the internal audit function.

Kai Chen


Kai is a first year PhD student at the School of Accounting and Finance. He obtained his Bachelor/Master of Economics from Fudan University and his certified public accountant designation while working in PricewaterhouseCoopers and KPMG as an auditor and a financial advisor. Kai's research interests lie in empirical financial accounting.

Khin Phyo

Khin Phyo Hlaing is a first year PhD student.  She is interested in voluntary disclosure level and capital market participants' use of financial accounting information.
